Travis Hunter has threatened to retire from football before even getting drafted.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star is among the NFL Draft prospects tipped to hear their names in the early going next week but claims to be prepared to pass up on a potentially legendary pro career if he isn’t allowed to play the way he wants to.
Hunter is the most intriguing player headed to the league in 2025. He’s the only one who’s been able to dominate the college game on both sides of the ball recently. But given the toll it would take on his body, he isn’t expected to be let loose on both offense and defense.
Still, that’s exactly what he wants to do.
The Heisman winner has let NFL teams know he intends to keep playing the way Deion Sanders allowed him to play in college.
Hunter told CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell he informed teams in the league he wants to play both as a receiver and defensive back and will quit if that condition isn’t met.
“It’s never playing football again,” he said. “Because I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it.”

None of the teams Hunter has met with so far has told him he can’t play both at WR and DB, but it appears he’s making sure they don’t flip on him once he’s drafted.
“I just feel very confident in myself,” he added. “And I got a competitive spirit that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I feel like I can do it.”
The 21-year-old had an incredible campaign with Colorado last season, and it culminated with a Heisman. He made 96 catches for 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, adding 35 tackles, four interceptions, and a forced fumble on defense.
Travis Hunter will have a better view of his future by next Thursday, with the first round scheduled to take place then. Whether or not he’s allowed to play the way he wants to also remains to be seen.
