Kanye West Hit With Copyright Lawsuit Over Nazi Support Allegations — German Singer Takes a Stand
Los Angeles, CA – Kanye West is once again making headlines, and not for his music. The controversial rapper is facing a serious lawsuit from German singer Alice Merton, who claims West illegally sampled her song “Blindside” on one of his recent tracks — even after she explicitly denied him permission.
And the reason behind her refusal? Merton cites West’s public support of Nazi ideology and anti-Semitic remarks as the core reason she wanted nothing to do with him or his music.
“Not on My Watch”: Merton Takes a Stand
According to the lawsuit filed this week, West allegedly used parts of “Blindside” in his track “Gun to My Head” — featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Kid Cudi — part of the Vultures project. Merton claims she was shocked when she first heard the sample in late 2023, having never approved its use.
She later revealed that Kanye, through his management at BMG Rights, formally requested to license the song in February 2024, but she refused — and made her reasons clear.
“The artist’s values are contrary to our values,” Merton told BMG, referencing her family’s personal connection to the Holocaust and the deeply offensive nature of West’s past statements.
After Refusing, the Harassment Began
After denying the request, Merton says she was met with a wave of online harassment, allegedly from Kanye’s fans, including threats and hate messages. What started as a simple act of protecting her work turned into an emotional ordeal — and now, a legal one.
Merton, a Jewish German citizen, has close family ties to Holocaust survivors, adding a deeper and more personal weight to her decision. For her, the lawsuit isn’t just about copyright — it’s about values, dignity, and accountability.
Will Kanye Face Consequences?
Legal experts say the case could be very strong in Merton’s favor. There is reportedly a clear paper trail showing she denied Kanye’s request before the song was released. If proven, West could be liable for damages and royalties, and the track in question may even be pulled from streaming platforms.
“If Merton’s claims are accurate, this is a textbook case of copyright infringement,” said one entertainment lawyer. “This could cost Kanye — big time.”
Fans Divided — Again
As expected, the internet is ablaze. Supporters of Kanye are calling the lawsuit an overreaction, claiming Merton is using the controversy for attention. Others, including musicians and activists, are standing behind her, praising her refusal to compromise her values for fame or money.
“She turned down a chance to be on a Kanye record — that takes guts,” one user posted on X.
“Protecting your art and standing up for what’s right shouldn’t be controversial,” another wrote.
Kanye’s Team Silent — For Now
As of now, Kanye West has not publicly responded to the lawsuit. His legal team has also declined to comment. Given the rapper’s history of high-profile legal battles and public backlash, many are watching closely to see how this unfolds.
